alien halloween makeup

Janna •

Don’t forget to enter the contest to have free Halloween makeup for the October 24 Halloween Hanger party! This year I decided to take on the challenge of turning our model Megan into an alien. I used the Make Up For Ever Flash Palette as well as the White and Black Chromacakes from MAC to achieve this look. For her “horns” I cut up a plastic necklace then spray painted them a matte black and glued them onto her face with Spirit Glue. BtB picks: summer staples

summer staples

Now that it actually feels like summer here in Edmonton with over 25ºC temps I figured now is the perfect time to share some of my go to summer staples. SPF is important all year round and especially in summertime for everyone and even more so for me as I do not tan at all and a mere 10 minutes in the sun can leave me looking like a lobster. After I put on my moisturizer in the morning I have been reaching for the Neutrogena clear face sunscreen in SPF 60. It has not broken my sensitive skin out yet and it has light reflectors the help blur imperfections. On days where I want more of a medium coverage finish on my face I have been using the IT Cosmetics CC cream that is SPF 50. After I finish using my CC cream I have been applying this amazing cheek stain by Tarte called fearless and on my oily skin which usually breaks up blush in under 5 hours it has been lasting over 10 hours. It leaves the most beautiful coral stain on my cheeks. A bonus is that it smells just like fruit loops and it can be used as a lip chap also. You can see me using it in our Boho Bronze makeup tutorial on Kristina. Lips I find are the most forgotten about when it comes to sun protection. I have experienced burnt lips first hand and trust me even though your lips swell up to Angelina Jolie status it is so not worth the pain. So when I am out in the sun I have been using the Ombrelle SPF 30 lip balm. The best part is that it is clear so I can layer any lipstick or gloss over it. Lets face it everyone wants bohemian beachy waves with the least amount of effort in the hot summer heat. I love this Davines ‘This is a Sea Salt Spray‘ as it gives me the right amount of hold when sprayed into my damp hair without getting that 90s crunch. Stef also featured this spray in her pregnancy favourites. Last but not least my two fail safe summer staples are my Ray Ban Wayfarers and of course a floppy hat to ensure the sun doesn’t burn my scalp to a crisp! Let me know what your summer staples are!

BtB picks: best full coverage concealer

Janna •

skin conceal

I am always on the hunt for the “perfect” full coverage concealer and I think that my search is finally over. When I went to LA IMATS with Stef I purchased 2 shades of the OCC skin conceal. OCC is a vegan and cruelty free brand which is amazing and I noticed that it doesn’t make me break out at all. I have very sensitive and breakout prone skin and some concealers (MAC Studio Finish concealer cough cough) make me break out almost instantly. Full coverage concealers are perfect for covering up hyperpigmentation, tattoos, scarring and very red pimples. I purchased 2 colours to that I could create a custom blend depending on if I was tanned.. aka using St. Tropez.. or my regular pale self. The 2 colours I have are YO and R1. The best part about these concealers are that they are super pigmented and you need only the tiniest amount of product. I have tried them under my eyes but found them to be a tad too thick for my personal taste and have stuck to using them just on my blemishes. *from my knowledge in Edmonton you can’t purchase the concealers in-store but OCC does ship to Canada or you can purchase them through Sephora online. Temptalia did a great post with swatches of all the shades to make it easier to figure out which one or two to order

summer makeup tutorial: boho bronze

Today we bring you another summer makeup tutorial that is super easy to recreate for a summer BBQ, a music festival or a summer wedding as modeled by Kristina. I used the LORAC Pro Palette to create the eye look which has the best selection of half matte and half frost shadows to create any look. I love palettes like the LORAC Pro since it gives you a really large range of colors that is cheaper than buying individual shadows

Summer makeup tutorial casual event

To celebrate our one year blogiversary (and my 26th birthday today-shameless plug) Stef and I decided to film a series of hair and makeup tutorials for summer looks. The first instalment, featuring the loveliest Kristina as our model, is going to be on makeup for a casual summer event (hence the cute caption on the photo) featuring the Naked 3 palette by Urban Decay. I got this palette earlier in the year and any chance I get to use it I jump on it. The colours are are tinted with a rosy pink which can lend to many different eye looks. Next week Kristina is going to be posting the full look with an outfit idea for those summer weddings coming up over on her blog. Check back with us on Monday for the tutorial on how to get the soft curls pictured above in our second video on hair. Better yet, get ahead of the game and subscribe to our new Youtube channel so you get first dibs on all of our tips and tricks. Let us know in the comments either below or in the video what kind of videos you would be interested in seeing from us. Thank you all for your support in this amazing first year of our blog!!

BtB picks: lip balm

Janna •

Even though Spring is finally here (if you couldn’t tell by the dump of snow we got yesterday) things are still very dry and static prone here where we live in Alberta, Canada. The worst part of the dry air is that your lips never seem to be hydrated and get all cracked and patchy. In comes my lip saviour of the past month which was a random purchase at Anthroplogie: The Soap & Paper Factory Lip Butter. This lip butter is the best lip balm I have come across in a long time and at $12 CAD it is a steal of a deal. I have the Limoncello one and it has the faintest smell of lemons and leaves your lips uber hydrated but with a semi-matte finish. To be honest I bought it without even testing it because of: a) all natural ingredients. b) easy to open lid and handy mirror in the inside c) charming story on the back of the tin about hot beaches in Italy and riding a vespa answer: all of the above but mostly c! I travelled to Italy when I was 23 and I tried Limoncello for the first time and this lip balm reminded me of all of my adventures in Italy. I am so pleased with it as it leaves my lips hydrated for hours and the packaging is adorable. win  win.

I bought all the things: IMATS LA

IMATS LA 2014 Haul

I don’t want to be like I have a problem but I for real have a problem! There is always a way that I find to justify makeup and hair product purchases and this past trip to LA was no different. Stef and I hit up Naimies where we have a pro discount as makeup artists to purchase some makeup so that when we went to IMATS we could focus on taking classes and not waiting in any long lines. My favorite purchase was for sure my new makeup kit as my old one was too small and one of the locks had stopped working.  Z Palette in Domed Black and Small Black (palette doesn’t come with the powders) Perricone MD Intensive Pore Minimizer and No Foundation Foundation in Fair NARS bronzer in Laguna and Light Reflecting Loose Setting Powder Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics Lip Pencil in Anti-Feathered, Conceal in YO and R1, Loose Color Concentrate in Clove. MAKE UP FOR EVER Mat Bronze in 20, Aqua Seal, and Aqua Brow in 15 Lime Crime Velvetine in Red Velvet and Pink Velvet, Opaque Lipstick in Babette Embryolisse Lait Creme Concentre GlamGlow Supermud Clearing Treatment Kryolan 2292 Fixing Spray and Ben Nye Final Seal Cinema Secrets Professional Brush Cleanser Kevin Murphy Anti Gravity Spray, Body Builder Mousse and Sticky Business Paste Kerastase Chroma Captive Masque and Elixir Ultime Serum OnDGo 301 Soft Case (same case just 2 different photos) Some of these products I am sure will end up being reviewed on our blog but let me know if you have any that you would especially like reviewed.

zombie halloween makeup

Janna •

When discussions began about which looks to create for our Halloween makeup series, it was obvious Stef and I were bound to attempt the classic Zombie makeup as neither of us had created the look before. Being the extreme scaredy cat that I am – I’m talking phobias galore – and having never so much as seen any tv/movie with zombies in it, I had to do a little internet research on what zombies really looked like. My older brother even joked that one – ie. me – could not create a zombie look without having ever seen anything with zombies in it. The rebel in me took that as a challenge and it made me want to create and even more impressive look. For this look I added a lot of hair conditioner to Tyler’s hair to give it that greasy lived in look – I learned zombies don’t shower or really actually take care of themselves at all. I then used latex and toilet paper to give his skin more texture and scars. I created my own blood mixture with corn syrup, cocoa powder (to make the blood look a more realistic rust colour) and red food colouring. I layered on MAC Face and Body in white mixed with a little bit of green from the MAKE UP FOR EVER Flash Palette to created the look of dead skin. I then went in with some MAC eye shadows in navy, red, purple and green to create bruises and damaged skin to make him look half dead and added the blood as the final touch. I successfully impressed my brother, among others – even eliciting genuine screams. How do you think I did? Model: Tyler for Numa Models MUA: Janna Huget Hair: Janna Huget Photography: Nicole Ashley

witch halloween makeup

Janna •

I was so excited to do my version of a witch this Halloween, I wanted pretty, high fashion hair and makeup to along with her glamorous and dramatic nails! I found the witch hat at Micheals, and then just glued on some black flowers for the glam effect. For her makeup I did dramatic contouring using Mac makeup and one of my new favourite contouring products by Kevyn Aucoin. Using a combination of green and black shadows and a variety of different paint pots for her eyes. For her lips, I used ‘the red glitterati’ by Violent Lips and was so happy with how it turned out! I am such a fan of how this look turned out and loved using so many new fun products! Another big thank you to Kalika Martin for her nail art and to Nicole Ashley for the amazing photo skills!
